About the people involved
Nigel Chorley – Nigel has lived in Wensleydale for thirty years and having spent a lifetime teaching and lecturing in mathematics, in more recent years he has applied his numerical skills to keeping accounts for a number of local organisations and now spends one day per week maintaining the accounts and membership records for us.
Kirsten Civil – Kirsten has been involved with YSDA since February 2006. She leads the gentle exercise class and coaches various sports on the MUGA. She also currently keeps the gym clean. Kirsten has a sports degree and qualified as a PE teacher in 1997 – and recently updated her fitness knowledge taking a course with Northern Fitness and Education; Chair Based Exercise for the frailer adult. She runs the soft play session for the under fives with a team of parent helpers.
Kieran Fahy – Kieran volunteers to help in many ways at the Sport and Fitness Centre and by so doing, feels he contributes towards the provision of a Community Service that has proved invaluable in the local area. If time allows he believes that volunteering gives immense satisfaction and develops many friendships.
Ian Godwin – Ian is a retired teacher who has been an Askrigg resident for the past three years. He is a YSDA Committee member, volunteer and occasional tutor and coach.
Jan Hale – A relative newcomer to YSDA, Jan joined the team in May 2010. She deals with the administrative tasks and co-ordinates the day to day activities of the Centre. Jan enjoys the role she has taken on within this community facility and is very keen to take an active part in further developing and promoting the Centre and the facilities it offers.
Lesley Williams – Lesley is a fitness coach, gym instructor and volunteer and can usually be found at the Centre on an evening taking classes or carrying out gym inductions! Like most of the staff that work for YSDA though, she is also involved in fund raising events helping to raise much needed money to support our valued facility.
Judy Nicholls (Yoga Instructor)
I had a back injury in the 1960’s when I was a student, and after receiving a lot of different treatments discovered that the practice of Yoga strengthened the area around the injury, helping me to become pain free. A few years ago, after 30 years of practicing Yoga and attending classes, I decided to train as a Dru yoga teacher to help others gain what I believe I have.
Yoga can help breathing, relaxation, focus and concentration, as well as strengthening the body and encouraging flexibility. Dru Yoga is gentle and flowing, takes into account that our bodies are not the same, and is based on the idea that we have a tendency to store up stress and tension in our tissues and that if that blocked energy is not released it can build up to cause illnesses. Most of all it helps body awareness so that we can avoid causing ourselves injury by better posture and movement.
It is possible to gain deeper benefits from regular practice that are better experienced and felt in order to understand.
