Recycle Scheme helps raise funds for YSF.

Raise cash by recycling trash! (Article featured in Upper Wensleydale Newsletter Oct06)

'Some of you may remember in January that Margaret Johnson and I started collecting old computer cartridges and mobile phones for W.R.V.S. North Yorkshire meals of wheels scheme. Margaret has now left Hawes. I estimate that we sent in abour £195 worth of trash for the scheme not bad for 8 months work! The Bainbridge box regularly produces plenty of items, why not Hawes as the centre of the largest population?

Just to remind you how you can do your bit for the environment-

The UK uses 60 million computer cartridges a year and only 10% are curreently re-cycled. They are made from engineering grade polymer, which in a landfill site would take 1000years to decompose.

There are estimated to be 90 million unused mobile phones in the country many made with nicad batteries containing cadmium, a toxic and carcingenic product, which if it leaks in the soil can cause kidney failure.

I decided to continue collecting, but chose a local good cause. Many of you will have seen the new multi games area at Yorebridge, in Askrigg and may have already sampled the area for football, tennis and childrens' activities with the new development officer Richard Shuffleton.

Very soon a further section will open in the form of a fitness room and gym. Although much money has been raised from grants and fund raising, I am told that further small pieces of equipment are needed, so all ages can benefit. One Bainbridge resident is eagerly waiting to improve his fitness for rugby!

So let's see if we can get well passed £200 in a short time. This is your centre for Upper Wensleydale- so use it, or lose it !!
