This year will be extra special because the Junior Inter-Schools 5-A-Side Tournament will be playing for the 'Sarah Ball Memorial Trophy'. Sarah was a keen supporter and volunteer helping to raise funds and develop the project during her time working as an Instructor at Low Mill Outdoor Centre. While on holiday last year Sarah sadly died in a climbing accident, we have fond memories of our time working with her and know that, while her life was cut short, she made an impact on the many people who had the privilege of getting to know her. We are delighted that her mum, Christine, has supported our tribute to Sarah.

Football team helps event score a success

A RECORD number of youngsters turned out for a football coaching session with Championship club Leeds United. Sixty-nine children, aged from five to 12, signed up for the ball skills session with the club's football in the community programme at the Yorebridge Sports and Fitness Centre in Askrigg. They came from areas from Hawes to Northallerton to improve their football skills.Yorebridge's sports and fitness development co-ordinator Richard Shuffleton said: "This is the first time we've invited a club like Leeds to come and do a coaching session for the kids and the response has been amazing."It's great to have the coaches here and the association with Leeds has attracted children from far and wide. "We've signed 50 per cent more kids than usual." He added: "We've been working closely with extended schools co-ordinator Debbie Coulson, at Wensleydale School, with whom we have strong links, to help arrange this event and it's been a great success." Ian Ingle, head coach for Leeds United football in the community, added: "As a club, we have the highest output of community football in the country, but this venue is the furthest out into North Yorkshire that we've travelled so far. "We've got boys and girls here with varying experiences of playing football, but they are all really keen to learn.

One year on...

...and we can’t believe that it is a year since we were celebrating our Grand Opening. To mark the occasion we had an open invitation to join us on Saturday 7th October 2006 for our annual Junior Inter-Schools 5-A-Side Tournament. Just like last year the matches were great to watch with teams taking part from Wensleydale and Swaledale schools. See our Match Report below for more details, including who won.

We appreciate all the extra work parents, grand-parents and carers do to support their family and friends at all our events so as a token of our thanks, refreshments were freely available at this celebration event.

Christine was unable to join us on this occasion but she visits the area again in November to plant a memorial tree as part of the Low Mill programme of remembrance celebrations. As an additional and fitting tribute Sarah's climbing equipment will be buried in a time casket at the foot of the tree. In years to come a 'Time Team' of the future will gain an insight into our primative lives and share in our remembrance of a special individual.

Match Report

Saturday 7th October saw another cold day for the One Year Anniversary Celebrations of the Multi Use Games Area at Yorebridge, Askrigg. To mark this special occasion Yorebridge Sport and Fitness helds its annual Inter-Schools Junior 5-A-Side Football Tournament, with two teams from Swaledale and teams from Middleham, Askrigg and Bainbridge. The event kicked off at 4pm with a host of talented players who were keen to show off their skills. All of the games were of a competitive nature, however, all children showed respect for their opponents, great sportsmanship and a great team spirit. After a long afternoon and some great games the final came down to Bainbridge and Swaledale ‘B’.

The final this year was played under floodlights which really seemed to give the children an extra boost of energy, with many starting to feel the effects of an afternoon of competition. What a great final it turned out to be as well. Enthusiasm and a desire to win from both teams allowed for end to end football. Each player showed great passion for the game with individual flair, hard tackling and great passing.

BAINBRIDGEWINNERS06

The only goal of the game came from Bainbridge in the first half who then showed great resolute to hold the game out until the final whistle. Indeed the final whistle was greeted with a great roar and celebrations from the Bainbridge team and supporters, with Bainbridge winning 1-0. However, there was still time for each team to show their appreciation for their opponents.

'I know I have had to support every team playing today but it is so hard when it's your local team playing as well, there was more excitment here tonight than if we had been sat at home watching England. We have seen some excellent and talented young players in action and who knows what the sporting future holds for some of you, congratulations to everyone who took part'. Yvonne Peacock, YSDA Chair.

Both of the finalists were then presented with a medal and certificate each by Yvonne Peacock (Chair), with the Bainbridge Team lifting the Sarah Ball Memorial Trophy, which they will now keep until next years event. It was then off home for all of the tired children, who probably watched the highlights of the England game! Unfortunately their heroes were unable to show the same passion that these young children from the Dales did!

Well done to every team who took part on the day. Each and every player was a credit to their school and themselves. Bainbridge can live easy for a year, but the battle will commence again next year!

Thanks to Dom, Diff, Lawrence, Tony and Dave for the roles of Match Officials; Yvonee, Christine, Leslie, Rima, Ade, Tom and Luke for serving refreshments and running the Tombola and anyone we may have missed. Thanks also to everyone else who gave their time to help to support the event either helping, spectating, co-ordinating teams or behind the scenes to make another sucessful event happen.

Party on the Pitch 2006

Band ImageOn 22nd July Askrigg Football Pitch was the venue for our fourth annual marquee fund-raising dance. The event was well attended with supporters gathering to dance the night away to locally based bands Ray and the Teenbeats and Sounds Familiar. Volunteers and committee members donned their chefs aprons to do a stint on the BBQ, sell raffle tickets and help on the door.

There were record numbers on the Sunday to help clear up and get the pitch back to match standard, a huge thanks to everyone who helped and supported the event. A special thanks to Suzanne Bell who chose to support our event using the Barclays Bank Pound for Pound Scheme. Proceeds will be in the region of £2,000 which will be used to further the development work of the YSDA as project ‘match funding’.

Don’t forget you can be part of the fun at Party on the Pitch 2007 which takes place on Saturday 21st July. Tickets are limited so don’t leave it too late! [Back]
